Avalanche Strikes Hyak Ski Area

Wednesday afternoon heavy rains triggered a massive avalanche which damaged several homes in the Hyak neighborhood of Snoqualmie Pass, Washington. The resulting landslide, estimated to be several hundred feet in diameter, also destroyed the primary chair lift at the Summit East ski resort, part of the Summit at Snoqualmie ski area, 50 miles southeast of Seattle. Emergency workers indicated that no one was severely harmed, though one man was briefly trapped in his home. Extreme weather is expected to last throughout the night, prompting the Washington State Department of Transportation to keep a 72 mile stretch of Interstate 90 closed till Thursday morning, when crews can reassess conditions.
